The Story Behind the Success

  • K. Lakshminarayan Bhattar, popularly known as Bhima Bhattar, was born in 1904 in Udyavara, near Udupi, into a Shivalli Madhva Brahmin family.

  • During his youth, after school hours, he would assist at his family’s restaurant, Girija Nivas, while also running a small business selling perfumes and cosmetics.

  • This simple beginning was the first step toward what would later become the generations of Bhima Jewellers.

Bhima Bhattar married Vanaja, and the couple were blessed with five sons: B. Girirajan, B. Krishnan, Dr. B. Govindan, B. Bindumadhav, and B. Lakshmikanthan.

After the passing of Bhima Bhattar, these sons carried forward his remarkable legacy, guiding the Bhima Group to greater heights and expanding its success across generations.

Foundation of BHIMA

Realising the growing demand for silver jewellery and pooja items among the people of Alappuzha in Kerala, Bhima Bhattar aspired to establish a dedicated silver store.

However, due to limited financial resources, he laid the foundation for silver trading with his wife’s silver anklets, marking the humble yet powerful beginning of Bhima’s legacy in silver.

Starting the Journey

  • After achieving success in the silver jewellery trade, Bhima Bhattar joined hands with Madhavam Pillai to establish a gold jewellery store named Alappuzha Emporium.

  • Later, he began his independent venture, excelling in both gold and silver businesses. By 1925, he had built a remarkable empire in the jewellery industry, earning recognition for his vision and integrity.

Starting the BHIMA jewellery

  • During the 1940s, around the time of World War II, low-quality gold was widely circulated in the market.

  • However, Bhima Bhattar, known for his honesty and uncompromising standards, stood apart by ensuring 100% purity in every piece of gold he sold.

  • With the guiding motto “Bhima Gold is Pure Gold,” he founded the now-legendary Bhima Jewellers in the Mullakkal region of Alappuzha, marking the beginning of a golden era built on trust and integrity.

A milestone of BHIMA Bhattar

  • He was the first to introduce readymade jewellery, moving beyond the traditional made-to-order model.

  • He established Kerala’s first ready-made gold jewellery showroom in Alappuzha.

  • He emerged as the leading diamond merchant in Kerala.

  • He was the first to introduce jewellery adorned with Navaratna (nine-gem) stones.

  • The artful jewellery-making designs and magnificent showroom experiences.

  • He was the first in Kerala to establish an air-conditioned jewellery showroom.

Triumph over challenges

  • In 1962, when the Gold Control Act was enforced by the Parliament, the jewellery trade faced a severe downturn.

  • During that challenging period, Bhima Bhattar skillfully steered his business through a unique, principled approach to trade.

  • Later, in 1992, after the act was repealed, Bhima Jewellers expanded its branches across several states, including Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, marking a new era of growth and success.

Final Years

  • When his beloved wife, Mrs. Vanaja Buttar, passed away on June 22, 1984, it deeply affected Bhima Buttar. The following year, on December 16, 1985, at the age of 81, Bhima Buttar passed away, leaving behind an enduring legacy in the jewellery industry.

The Everlasting BHIMA Bhattar

  • After his passing, his sons carried forward Bhima’s noble principles across the southern states of India. Today, with over 70 branches and a legacy spanning more than a century, Bhima continues to flourish successfully, even extending its presence to international destinations like the United Arab Emirates.

“A bond that transcends generations belongs only to Bhima”
